My Photography Origin Story

Have you ever thought about what you would do if you could do any job you wanted? Over the past 5 or so years, I have gone through a lot of change in my professional life. I left a job and a company that I thought I would spend my whole career working for. I moved to a brand new role at a new company. And then I realized that even though I enjoy my job and I’m good at it, it doesn’t inspire me. It doesn’t give me that feeling; that excitement. So started thinking about what did make me feel that spark. What was the thing I’d always wanted to do, but never did because it isn’t “practical” like my job as an engineer?

Photography. The answer was so obvious. I have loved taking photos for my whole life. I was so upset in high school, because in order to take photography you had to take 3 years of other art classes first. And I’m not interested in or good at any other type of art. Photography is my “thing” artistically. Once upon a time I photographed a friend’s wedding shower completely on my cell phone. And damnit those photos weren’t bad!

My husband bought me my first DSLR camera back in 2019 for Christmas, because I wanted to be able to document our son as he grew. I started finding photography challenges online and doing them, but never submitting anything. I just did them for practice. I never thought this hobby would go anywhere “real.”

In spring 2022, with encouragement from my therapist, my husband, and a very good photographer friend, something in my mindset changed and I decided to try doing this photography for real. I joined an online photography academy, bought a used, professional DSLR camera, and started posting on local facebook pages looking for people that would let me practice on them for free. Alex Reglin Photography LLC was born.

Now, over a year later, I look back on the images from my first couple free model call sessions and I am so proud of myself for taking that leap. These are still some of my favorite moments that I’ve captured. I didn’t have any clue what I was doing, but I just did it. And it made me feel inspired. It set my soul on fire. For the first time in my life I understand what people mean when they say you can love what you do for a living. I can’t wait to see where this goes and what I learn along the way. So, if you’re reading this, thank you for supporting me. Thank you for being here. And, most of all, thank you for trusting and letting me learn and grow with you.
